It looks like a good movie but it doesn't look like Holmes. More like a Shanghai knights knockoff with no asians.

That movie looks great. and really funny. Jude Law looks like he is going to be a very interesting Watson and I am certain Downing will do great as Holmes.

It doesn't look like Holmes. Exactly. -_-

This is not a Sherlock Holmes. This is Action Movie A, with a name ripped off of a great series and plastered on the movie case.

I am going to see it, it looks good. The trailer showed a good blend of action and comedy.

It looks good, but one gets the feeling that this trailer may misrepresent what the finished product is going to be like. This is Holmes, I doubt there is going to be as much action and one-liners in the movie as there was (proportionally) in this trailer.

It's meant to be more like how Holmes supposedly would have been.. an alcoholic & a womanizer, alongside an awesome detective too. For the time anyway. I think it looks good and can't wait for it. I'll admit Jude Law as Watson is an odd choice, but if Downing is as good as he was in Iron Man then he should be the perfect Holmes.

    It doesn't look Sherlock Holmes.

That said, I'm still going to watch it, as I'm a HUGE fan of Holmes and Robert Downing Jr. <_<

I'm hoping they don't ruin it, and there's Irene Adler in the film... so. Looking forward to it.

edit- Also, apparently it got leaked... according to what the comments in the video linked says anyway. I haven't checked it out, but if it's true, I will be very mad.

Yeah, I agree with Itziak. This does not look like Holmes because it is not Holmes. As capable as I'm sure that Holmes is of doing such things, I really cannot see him jumping out of a fucking window or going into a boxing match naked for no reason despite his prowess in the field. And I can't see a detective case that could possibly require anywhere near this much action or anywhere quite as dramatic an exclamation as "the world will end in however many days".

I was almost excited at the thread title, thinking that they would pick a story from a novel and remain faithful to it, but that excitement died rather quickly.

Yep, pretty much agree with anti-ActionHero!Holmes sentiment. Felt the same when that Casanova movie came out.

The BBC did a pretty good TV-Movie on Sherlock Holmes a few years back, with Rupert Everett as the lead.
    Youtube Clip.

Come to think of it, there was also a vastly superior Casanova mini-series as well, starring David Tennant.

Guy Ritchie = instant win :D

Let's hope it lives up to his normal standards --> RocknRolla, Snatch, Revolver, Lock Stock TSB.

You claim to be a huge fan and yet, you can't spell his name right? ^_-

Sorry for being a dick. Just couldn't resist. :awesome

I apologise. Two of the previous posters before me both spelled it as "Downing". I must have just seen wrongly. <_<

    edit- Make that THREE.

I've always enjoyed Holmes's sheer brilliance, so I'm quite glad about the production of this movie. With the cast that it has, the chances of it being a success are quite good, I would think. I'm quite excited to see Downey play a womanizing Holmes and McAdams the woman he admires above all others, Irene Alder. I worry, however, that we might find ourselves with a movie where the action and humor are there to make up for the lack of plot. I'm definitely can't wait to see it, though.

I hope the movie is awesome. I'm a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. Although I never really picture the Holmes stories as action packed. I guess I'll read through them again to see if I missed anything but all that jumping around and explosions looked like too much work for the awesome Mr. Holmes. And it was stated repeatedly that he wasn't really into women like that. Not that he was gay or anything but just that he found romantic love pretty pointless and illogical.

Yeah, I was reading Wikipedia's bio of Irene Alder, and it talked about how Holmes didn't have the 'softness' to have lovers; he thought that beneath him and would sneer at the prospect. He did, however, hold the highest regard and admiration for Irene, so it'd be interesting to see how far the movie takes their relationship.

Basically what's been said: Downey doesn't look like Holmes, he doesn't make sense as an action hero, etc.

That being said, it does look interesting and I'll probably see it unless it gets terrible reviews.

On the subject of boxing, if I remember the books correctly, there is at least one mention of his boxing skills.

Definitely. He knew boxing and some Japanese style fighting. He was also a pretty good cane fighter. Watson was in the military and always had his rifle. I think he was a pretty good shot too.

It was a pistol; carrying a rifle around the streets of London was generally frowned upon. But yeah, he was a pretty good shot.
