Okay so recently Ive been watching this show on Showtime called Dexter which is about a serial killer who works for the police as a blood spatter analyst and I came up with an idea.

In the show Dexter became the emotion killer he is because at a young age he witnessed his parents murders by a serial killer who then left him locked in a tiny space for days with but the rotting bodies of his parents and a large pool of blood. After he was found by the police he was adopted by a veteran cop who recognized Dexter's new found urge to kill and realized that he had to do something about it. Harry the cop taught Dexter to only kill bad people and taught him how to fake emotions like a normal person as well as teaching him everything he knew about avoiding police detection.

From this I came up with the idea what if Harry's childhood with the Durseley's happened the same way? Around the age of 4 a serial killer recently escaped from prison breaks into the Durseley home and murders all three of them and Harry as well or so the killer thinks. He drags the bodies to a local landfill to dump them but Harry is still alive so for days he is trapped with the trash and rotting corpses until the police rescue him. Harry's urge to kill has been awakened.

When child services or whatever it is they have in Britain places Harry in an orphanage he is then adopted by a muggle police officer who recognizes what could happen if Harry isnt guided properly and then proceeds to teach him everything he knows about avoiding the police and acting human. Most importantly however he teaches Harry that he should only kill bad people when he is absolutely certain that they are guilty. He grows up under the officer's guidance until his 11th birthday and then everything changes with the arrival of that familiar letter.

    The Rules:
    1. Harry doesn't have emotions or understand others emotions whatever he seems to have he is simply faking.
    2. This isnt crucial but in the show Harry the cop had a biological daughter as well, so giving Harry a sister might add an interesting twist.
    3. Magic is a very powerful tool for Harry to use in his..."adventures" and he will. Studying new and interesting spells that can be used for killing/torture and general dissection of a human will be very interesting to him.
    4. Unlike Dexter, Harry has not had the full benefit of the training the cop will give him so there will be slip-ups.

This could work. But muggle policeman seems like a needless intrusion when you already have the perfect man for the job - Dumbledore. Faced with the reality of Harry's new character, I think it'd be perfectly in his character to train Harry to clear away 'bad' people to satiate his hunger.

Besides, I always found all those plots where Harry is forgotten in the muggle world too naive; there's no way the Order would let Harry out of their sight, as demonstrated by Figg, Diggles and other wizards popping by from time to time.

I've read the books and watched the series since the first episode of season one and I've thought about a similar situation before. Only difference is I was thinking Mad Eye would be ideal as the one to raise Harry and teach him to channel his darkness by killing other killers. He was an Auror, so he fits the whole cop thing. Plus, if you don't use Dumbledore as Harry's mentor it adds some intrigue at Hogwarts since Harry will have to hide his Dark Passenger from him as well. Harry's life would be much harder without Dumbledore covering for him.

Harry will need Occlumency to hide from Dumbledore though. However, thanks to his lack of emotions, Occlumency should be much easier for him.

It will arrive momentarily. As soon as I finish one of my stories, it will be published.

I've usually not good with update rates, but I've already planned this one out.

Yes, Dumbledore should defo take the place of the cop. It would eliminate any unnecessary muggle influences, since Dumbledore would be training Harry in the ways of magic and avoiding magical detection.

Why Dumbledore? Dumbledore recognizes how badly scarred by the event Harry is, and his potentially dangerous mentality. Harry is also the one fated to defeat Lord Voldemort. Voila, the event has helped mould Harry into the perfect, compliant (or seemingly so) weapon.

Yeah, Moody could work IF he knew the Prophecy. Without it, he'd have no reason not to defer the authority to Dumbledore or someone else in charge. I find it hard to imagine Moody who loves Harry that much not to report him as a potential dark wizard.

A Dumbledore that takes into account the DH revelations would work best, as he's less benevolent than our previous image of Dumbledore.

We know two things about Moody...he hates death eaters, and he's a very paranoid fuck. Passing on some sense of his "code" as a former auror to a damaged boy doesn't seem all that unbelievable. He wouldn't need the prophecy to make the decision between Harry Potter and the dark wizards who tried to kill not only him, but the rest of his auror pals, would he?

I think Moody would be perfect for the 'mentor' role in this situation.

Not to mention...Moody could find two things in a Harry of this nature:
    1. An outlet. All those things he's always had urges to do to Death Eaters and dark wizards, Harry can do. He's above reproach in the magical world because of 'defeating' Voldemort at this point.
    2. Someone similar. Moody has been so damaged during his career that he attacks clocks for chiming on the hour. Wouldn't he be able to channel all that rage, frustration, and ability through the young, eager killer Harry would be in this situation?

How about making the departure from canon less generic. Anyone who thinks of a HP/Dexter cross (however few that may be) will have it with the Dursley's.

I propose that the Dursley's are already dead from one of Voldemort's muggle massacres beforehand. Dumbledore can't rely on the blood wards so he sends Harry to the most well protected family at the time, the Longbottoms.

They ignored Dumbledore's suggestion that they use a Fidelius stating that they don't want to live in such a state of paranoia now that You-Know Who- is gone and that their current protections has served them well in the past. Their continued vigilantism delays their run in with the Lestranges until Harry and Neville are 3-4 years old and it happens in front of them both.

Afterwards, Neville goes to his authoritarian grandmother to become the traditional Norman Bates-like serial killer and Harry goes to Moody/Dumbledore/Whomever and becomes like Dexter.

This way you can get the Dexter/Brian interaction that was so fun in the first season/book and the start is not the typical crossover template that readers have come to expect.

Why not take the AU a step further? Let's say Lily still sacrifices her life to save Harry from Voldemort, only in this universe James survived that night(was out of the house? I dunno) and lives on to raise the son his wife died to protect.

However, as Harry grows older it becomes readily apparent that there's something not quite right about him. Enter the whole emotionless, killing animals thing.

This could provide for some delicious internal conflict for James(even more than it did for Harry the police officer). On one hand, he's fully aware that his son is rapidly becoming a monster and there's little he can do to prevent that, on the other hand, Harry is his son and all he really has left of Lily. So, like with Dexter, he takes it upon himself to train Harry to kill the "right" sort of people and to do it well. Great opportunity to make Harry an animagus right hyah.

An easy way to explain Harry's sociopathy would be the killing curse. Think about it: powerful dark curse right to the forehead, bound to cause at least some brain damage, right?

In my opinion, the Dexter/Brian plot is unnecessary, it would made the story too predictable. I think that it would be better to just utilise the idea of Harry, the emotionless killer.

My proposition is that assuming it was the bloody death of Dursleys that drove Harry beyond, the question is who could raise and train him.

    IMO there are two options:

    a) Dumbledore himself goes to check up on Harry and finds out his problem, therefore in order to avoid any future problems he teaches him the code of Harry (or here the code of Dumbledore).
The problem with this idea is that Dumbledore is a public person and having him raise/train Harry wouldn't go unnoticed so this one is most likely out....

    b) Dumbledore asks Mad-Eye to check up on Harry. Following the order (make sure he's safe or sth remotely simillar) and realising what the problem with Harry is Moody reports back (or not) to Dumbledore and is asked to ensure Harry's safety, meaning: take him in and train him.
We could always import some parts of Dexter plot like having Harry being adopted by a member of Moody's family (it's kind of unrealistic I guess, isn't it?). In this case he could have a sister and Moody as a Harry, the fatherly figure from Dexter.

The idea of a Harry/James by Mechanicalchrist is quite good too... as he said powerful dark curse right to the forehead is bound to cause at least some brain damage...

Anyway, this xover is a story I'd really like to read.

A little problem with the timeline. In the book (and the show) Dexter didn't start actual killing till he's a teenager. He might've killed rabbits or whatever before eleven, but his first true kill was a monkey on a trip with his dad. "Stop the nurse... like the monkey..." Harry said to Dexter on his deathbed if I remember correctly. And that kill (the nurse) happened well into Dexter's teenage.

So in this AU Harry's killing instincts would have to be trained while he's at Hogwarts. The only man capable of that is Dumbledore (unless you want Moody teaching DADA, where he wouldn't last more than a year anyway) and even then I have my doubts. I'd thought of a Harry/Dexter cross myself as soon as I read Dearly Devoted, but I couldn't see a killer like Dex at Hogwarts.

Unless, of course, you make Harry a killer at eleven. But even if Harry becomes good at hiding himself, I can't see Dumbledore (who didn't allow Draco fucking Malfoy to kill him because that would damage Malfoy's soul) condoning Harry doing away with his students. And Hogwarts is not Miami. A missing student will be noted.

That said, I'd like a good Harry/Dexter crossover.

(Imagine what'd happen if Harry sees Albus Severus growing up like Dexter. And hopefully blames it on Ginger... we can but hope. :D)

I have been working on a Dexter based story were Dumbledore noticed Harrys tendency to kill animals when Harry was 6 and slowly started to try and stop Harry but faced with Harrys lack of emotion after his first kill in first year so does he start to train harry, to be able to point harrys destructive urges in the right direction...

Mors Mortis: It would be a cool story to have Harry Potter take the place of Harry the Cop and train Albus Severus as a "good" serial killer.

Look at the name, it should be obvious.
A Dexter like Harry would pwn. I think it would be better if the story is set after Hogwarts though. Killing while you are still inside school doesn't make sense and s a bit out of the realm of reality.

I think a Harry who carefully crafts his life like Dexter would be a much more effective. No one would expect The Boy-Who-Lived to be a closet serial killer. Add that with his perfectly crafted life the chances of his discovery are very little.

Perhaps as an occupation he could be an Unspeakable. He knows what goes on in the Ministry. He knows when gold changes hands to keep someone out of Azkaban. Then Harry's Dark Passenger comes out to play.

This challenge has a lot of potential. I eagerly await the work of whomever takes the challenge.

The trauma thing is a great idea, however, I doubt Dumbledore, judging from his past actions, will allow anybody to kill. Most likely, if Harry were to be brought under Dumbledore's care, he'll try to force Harry to suppress the killing urges, not honing it. By doing that, the moment Harry falls into those urges, he'll be caught quickly, because of the lack of a mentor.

Moody being a teacher would be a much better idea, as the people pointed out. The mentoring can begin at an earlier age, with the killing instincts happening in Hogwarts. If they need to contact each other, I'm sure Moody probably has some secure form of communication.

Other than that, I really look forward to the story of whoever takes up the challenge.
