After watching The Mask, I had a crazy idea: what would Harry do if he got a hold of the mask? What havoc would he wreak upon his foes? His friends? Innocent bystanders?

My challenge to you, DLP, is to make this happen in hilarious and disturbing ways.

Isn't that a bit... vague for a challenge? Matter of fact, I'm sure it already exists on ff.net somewhere. Anything more specific you had in mind?

I like the idea and I'd certainly read it. Just make it a slightly darker mask then what appeared in the movie. To fit more to DLP's tastes you know.

 

The original comics were actually pretty nasty, IIRC. More importantly, five seconds at FFnet pulled this up: Harry Potter and the Mask of Loki. I vaguely remember reading it before and not finding it very good.

EDIT: Suppose I should explain. How nasty? I have an issue of a Dark Horse-produced Mask/Lobo crossover. In one scene they've blown each other to hell and back, and their severed heads pick up some nearby junk with their tongues and start beating each other.

 

Hmm, didn't realize I was being vague. Nor did I think that such a crossover existed already. OK. I'll iron out what I was thinking.

Harry, aged 15-16 sometime in the post-OotP summer. Dudley steals the mask from some kid he beat up, and it either doesn't work for him or he keeps getting interrupted before putting it on. Deciding it's worthless, he throws it at Harry after being antagonized. Harry walks out of the houses, messes with it, and discovers it's powers. He then uses the mask to defeat Voldemort in crazy, wacky methods worthy of the movie the Mask. So, basically a crack!fic involving Harry using the Mask to solve his problems in a ridiculous fashion.

 

Crack!fics for the most part with very few exceptions, suck. If your going to write it, I suggest you don't make it one.

Check the Recycling Bin for all of the ones that do.

And you've now got a pretty good example of what works and what doesn't. Do this, not that. But I still wouldn't make it into a crack!fic. Too easy to fail at the funny and then its just a mess of nonsensical shit.

 

Never trust anything if you don't know where it keeps its brain.
