One thing thats always stumped me on AU pre-hogwarrts fics is which house to stick Harry in? I know many of us dont like Gryffindor here since that does work well with independent or dark fics.

Ravenclaw is used far too often, as everyone who wants to avoid the slytherin cliche puts him here. The problem is so many avoid the slytherin cliche that ravenclaw has become another.

Slytherin is sometimes ok, but generally people dont develope Harry correctly to have this house make sense for him. Most just toss him there as the opposite of gryffindor

Hufflepuff isnt really every used at all. I personally wanted to use this house in my own fic im gunna write, but it seems the second you sort someone to hufflepuff people assume hes going to be weak and people stop reading.

other people even go as far as to cross him over in houses or go "unsortable"

    what would you guys do?

I think writers should forget what's clishe and what isn't and just choose the house their character is best suited for.

exactly what i was thinking! Only er... without the dark lord part. Still no one would suspect a hufflepuff of turning their back on wizarding world.

He may be loyal, but that doesnt mean he has to be loyal to everyone :D

I figured people would exploit that a little more often

I've seen Slytherin done really well, and that was one of two Slyth!Harry fics I'd read so I dont have to bad of expierences with that.

Ravenclaw is starting to get really cliche though.

Hufflepuff would be fun to read..

A cool idea would be to place Harry in Griffindor against the better judgement of the sorting Hat. But after he gets to know how the Griffindorks really are he absolutly despises them and is an outcast

actually i did read a story when harry is an independent badass kid that lives on his own. when he came to hogwarts he was put on Hufflepuff because harry wanted to create as much chaos as possible. as the story develops further harry helps Hufflepuff to become more...you know what i mean.

any way the story is very unique and fresh because not many people would do this. so i suggest you try putting harry into Hufflepuff.

but a peace of advice, the more noticible characters that are normally are around harry should be more human if you know what i mean.

anyway this is just a suggestion. good luck

that's right... why most people associate Hufflepuff with weakness... where is the weakness in hardworking and loyalty?
Beeing powerfull while you arre working hard for it didn't mean that you are weak, you are just worth of your power...

A Hufflepuff!Harry must be worth to read.

i think thats hufflepuff is thought weak because they rarely become leaders of any sort. Think about it, they make the perfect subordinates, hard working, and also loyal, but those traits don't necessarily make a good leader.
